About DERC

The centre is located on the eighth floor of the Hsiao Feng Memorial Hall of the main Yangming shan campus of the Chinese Cultural University and combines all the equipment and knowledge from related departments of space information sciences necessary to conduct research related to Digital Earth.

The objectives of the centre are:
•To disseminate the concept of and the education of space information science related to the Earth.
•To develop related techniques and applications based on Digital Earth Theory.
•To offer all the related professional services related to earth science techniques.


Fields of research:
The fields of research for DERC are based on the concept of Digital Earth, by combining Remote Sensing (RS), GIS and GPS, (the 3S techniques), and by using Scientific Simulation (SS) techniques to present the results in the form of virtual reality, in order to solve the practical problems of the Earth with these ‘4S’ techniques. DERC combines the manpower of all related departments of Earth Science in the disciplines of Atmospheric, Hydrosphere and Terrestrial studies.



Remote Sensing
Remote sensing is a kind of modern science that does not need direct contact with the object but uses specialized equipment or machine to analyze information of areas. Due to most satellite resources have been equipped with spectrum sensor, including visible light, close ultra-red light…etc of different wave band. Using different bolo-energy from disparate wavelengths, it can receive and analyze different targets. Also, satellite image has the characteristic to cover vast areas, have large information quantity as well as multi-spectrum and repeated observation ability; thus, it is suitable for regional and global environmental monitor use. For example, analyze landforms and terrain, utilize land resources, investigate earth’s surface change, sort out forest vegetation, monitor ecological environment, changes in town and country’s population…etc.



Geographic Information System
In the past few years, GIS has become a fast-developed technology. It uses computer tools to integrate different sources of open-space information, in order to help users manage earth’s environment. Also, it can assist decision-makers to formulate the best open-space policy so that we will have abundant and lasting earth resources to use. Because of GIS vigorous development of the past years, government agencies, intellectual units and private enterprises have produced a revolutionary change in the use of geographical information. Vast amount of geographical information that was originally scattered in each government agencies, for example, maps, aviation photos, statistics, detailed list, statistic information…etc, could integrate and become disperse geographic information storage through GIS technology and the internet. In addition, through the development of GIS system, each government agency’s open-space decision, program, management quality and efficiency have greatly improved. Intellectual units could also use government unit’s large amount of geographic information to promote research efficiency. Private enterprises should make good use of government’s geographic information, choose the best managerial district in order to reduce the cost and elevate profits.



Global Position System
The Global Positioning System (GPS) has been one of the most recent and important advances in space positioning technique. It is a technology that combines with satellites and communication development. Due to its effectiveness and high positioning accuracy, GPS has been widely applied in many different fields. In past decades, it was only applied for military purposes. But now, the type of applications has been widely demonstrated in our lives, including surveying, navigation, communication, tracking, management and environmental monitoring.




Scientific Simulation
During the past years, computer multi-media technology has been rapidly developed and integrated with visual effects, messages and images of many types of information…etc. It not only successfully presented the virtual reality’s effect but also fully accomplished the interaction and communication between users and designers. In 1989, Jaron Lanier brings up the idea of “Virtual Reality”. This is an organic sense reaction that could make human feel the authenticity through the computer and its surrounding equipment, software and imitate real environmental image…etc. Although virtual reality can imitate the real environment, its integrated inter-material does not have all the correct data. So, our center came up with a scientific imitation preposition, to lead the concept of virtual reality and combine the 3S technologies of remote measure, GIS and the GPS as a way to present the use of 3D virtual reality for scientific imitation result.

Scientific imitation is a data that comes from combining with the real world and through computer drawing technology as well as presenting access transmission. One imitating way to reveal that virtual space exists is to use computer technology to mutually combine information and the real world concept. It’s real purpose is to cross the entity world of time and space limit, get through a real cyber space to present the true world image and solve any problem that might encounter in the real world or start something that will be beneficial in the future.

The concept of digital world is through combining the 3S technology of remote measure, GIS and GPS. For the result, use the scientific method of 3D virtual reality to present it can reach information on earth through Internet transmission and thus become the state of global village that is related to everyone.
